Raku with you!! Natasha Poppe

Picture
Raku is the common name given to a firing style that originated in Japan. The American version is a two-step process, and it’s a lot of fun!  The firing is done outdoors. We take the red-hot pots out of the kiln (try not to burn your eyebrows!) and put them into a barrel with sawdust or other combustibles. As the flames leap up, we close the barrel. The pots absorb the smoke and turn black, and the glazes change chemistry because the flame, seeking oxygen, pulls it out of the oxides in the glazes. When we use white glazes, we see black patterns where the smoke crept in. With copper, iron, or cobalt oxide glazes, we get the metallic effects the flames created for us! In our first session, we will make tiles, beads or smallpots.  In our second session, we will glaze and fire up!  Cost of this two part class is $55, with a $10 firing fee, all materials included.
